Easily one of my favorite places in Saint Lucia!! A truly authentic experience set in a garden and grounds of magic and wonder like Middle earth from The Hobbit. Family owned and run and they really care about their guests. Highlights are the sugar mill ruins, river and black sand beach. Accommodations are bungalow style mainly and serene. A true escape from the modern world of hustle and bustle.
Thank you for a lovely quarantine stay! I was lucky to have been able to stay at Balenbouche and enjoy the large property for two weeks which has a lots of old trees, a yoga barn, ruins, pastures and two small beaches attached to it (one beach you get to it by passing by some friendly cows). It’s an idyllic natural place to get away from pandemic life in the U.S. Yes, there is no AC (it’s not that hot at night anyhow), and yes you will hear crickets at night, and yes you do need to sleep under a mosquito net, but the accommodations are comfortable, the showers hot, the dinners brought to the cottage delicious and the family that runs it wonderful. Merci bien.
I stayed with Verena, Uta, and Anitanja at Balenbouche for two weeks when I arrived to Saint Lucia for my quarantine and the stay was absolutely delightful. The property itself is gorgeous with multiple beaches to swim and explore, so much light, green, and open space, and adorable cabins. I felt like I was in a slice of paradise my whole time. Beyond that, they absolutely took care of me- the meals were delicious, they took care of my shopping so that I was always well stocked, and they were ready to help with any excursions or anything else that I needed. The whole process of booking, arriving, and staying was so seamless and wonderful. I definitely will return and have any of my friends and family stay here when they visit.
My partner and I had the best time at Balenbouche Estate. We stayed there for two weeks to quarantine for the rest of our stay in St Lucia, and it was the perfect transition between life in the US and life on the island. We enjoyed our downtime at the estate by exploring the grounds and sugar mill ruins, and swam at one of the two beaches just about every day. The home cooked meals were delicious and our hosts were very sweet and accommodating! We can’t wait to go back.
Visited Balenbouche with my wife, 6mths after a heart operation,. This is a magical, spiritual and healing place, exactly what we needed to recuperate. The cottages, sacred grounds, private beach and, oh my god, the organic food. Exquisite!
Uta, I apologize for taking so long to leave this review, you are a truly beautiful human being. I will never forgot you guiding us to the Arawak gathering place, through the overgrown jungle, leading the way with a machete. We are coming back for my 50th. Cannot wait to explore the Island, more of Balenbouche. and to be with you again, Uta.
We greatly enjoyed our time at Balenbouche. It was exactly what we needed to recharge our batteries. We felt very cared for and enjoyed all the little care to detail touches in our cottage and during meals. Uta and Verena checked in with us regularly to make sure our needs were met. They were both very warm and their hospitality made our stay feel relaxing. The grounds of the estate were beautiful. We felt like we had been transplated to a different time. Our cottage was perfectly rustic. All of the wood cutouts let in amazing light in the morning. The breakfast each morning on the porch of the estate house was delightful. It was wonderful to be able to look out at all the greenery and enjoy a delicious European style breakfast. We felt a sense of calm as we leisurely drank coffee and gazed at the beauty of the grounds. The evening meals were equally delicious and charming. We loved the beach access right on the grounds of the estate. Watching the sunset sink into the ocean was a hightlight. In addition, Uta and Verena assisted us with setting up sight seeing excursions on the island. There are amazing sights to see not far from the estate. We are beyond pleased that we got to have such an amazing experience at Balenbouche. It is truly a special place and our time there will always be a one that we cherish.

The retreats here are among my favourites and I have been many times. They provide simply furnished cabins, cottages and apartments, and (on request) great food and excellent yoga instruction – all set in a stunning location full of waterlily ponds, majestic trees and organic planting. There is an authentic Caribbean feel to the rooms and spaces with mosquito nets, verandas and fresh coconuts and mangoes (in season) and the odd blast of music from the local town. At Balenbouche, my days are spent reading on my veranda, going on a short walk to the beach, visiting neighbouring villages or picking fruit for a quick snack. Balenbouche is filled with the remnants of Caribbean history with an old sugar mill hidden amongst elegant palms, lemongrass bushes, frangipani and hundreds of fruit trees. The family running the Estate have lots of friendly pets who quickly adopt you on your walks to nearby beach so it’s a great place to visit with friends, family, loved ones or on your own for some quality me-time. Balenbouche is a very special place, hidden down a quiet side road, somewhere you want to remain a secret.
