Calabash is ideal for a single person, couple or a couple with young child. A baby bed or extra twin bed can easily be placed in the adjoining space next to the bed. Our guests love the wooden covered deck with the open air kitchenette, inviting you to cook, relax or work. Although surrounded by nature, the bedroom and adjoining walk in bathroom are more enclosed and built with concrete, which keeps the interior cool and protected from the elements.

The Calabash cottage is located near the Almond Cottage and the Balenbouche Plantation house – it is a little less secluded than some of our other accommodations, but still quite private. If you are looking for an authentic and inexpensive accommodation in a beautiful natural surroundings, our Calabash Cottage might just be the perfect place to settle in!

Please note that all our historic and newer accommodations are built in an eco-friendly, open and tropical style, with no screens or air conditioning, only mosquito nets. Balenbouche is best for adventurous travelers who are comfortable with the outdoors, do not require resort style amenities and are looking to experience true island life.

The story of Calabash

Calabash began as a store room for horseback riding equipment, behind the rainwater cistern which supplied the main house until 1998. Most of the structure was later replaced with a room for volunteers, with concrete blocks. About a decade later, the covered wooden deck was added, and the cottage was renamed “Calabash” after the Calabash tree and lush vegetation it overlooks. In 2021, we added a kitchenette with a beautiful tropical hardwood countertop to the deck, making the Calabash a fully self sufficient cabin.

Future plans for Calabash include replacing some of the plywood walls and ceilings with hardwood, replacing the queen bed with a king, raising the ceiling and roof, adding a door between bedroom and bathroom, and building an outdoor shower.
