Vieux Fort, The capital of the South
Vieux Fort is St Lucia’s second largest town, and where the Hewanorra International airport (UVF) is located. It boasts one of the islands prettiest and longest white sand beaches, and surprisingly few tourists or hotels. There is only one resort on the north end of the Anse de Sable or “Sandy beach” (yes, this is the official name of the beach both in English and French). Sandy beach, and the two or three little cafe’s along it, is a popular hang-out for a handful of locals and visitors in the South of the island. The Reef restaurant and bar, a long standing institution, is now also also a kite surfing station, where you can rent kayaks, lawn chairs kite and windsurfing equipment.
The old downtown area of Vieux fort is a little neglected and empty, since many businesses have moved to the outskirts. However, there, you will find the local fishmarket, the Saturday morning farmer’s market, and some traditional west Indian architecture.
Along the main road, without having to go down into the old part of town, you will find everything you need; gas stations, banks, a supermarket, drug store, internet cafe/print shop, phone companies, hardware store, snack places, and liquor store.
A few minutes outside of town, going north towards Soufriere, there is the Gablewoods South shopping mall, which has a supermarket, restaurant, post office, small hardware store, dentist and several small shops.
Just South of Vieux Fort there is the Moule a Chique Peninsula, the southernmost point of the island. You can drive up to the lighthouse and go to the viewing point opposite the lighthouse to see all the way to the pitons. The St Judes hospital is just outside town, as well as the Heineken brewery and several international medical schools.
From Vieux Fort, you can take a local bus directly to Castries, Soufriere, Choiseul, Laborie, Augier, La Resource, and everything along the way.
