main center of activity and tourism area. The Castries, Gros Islet
and Rodney Bay area offer various types of accommodation, beautiful
white sand beaches, shopping facilities, a cruise port, two marinas,
entertainment and nightlife. While the North may be too commercially
exploited for some, a visit to St. Lucia would not
be complete with at least a day's trip to the nation’s capital
and environs. Popular attractions include the Castries market, Pigeon
Island National Park, Fond Latisab Creole Park, the Folk Research
Center, the St. Lucia Government House, and the Gros Islet street
party. |
| The East Coast is wild and rugged, offering
dramatic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and coastline. It's the perfect
place to go hiking and bird watching, or experience turtle nesting
on some of St. Lucia's most stunning
white sand beaches. The East Coast is earmarked for future residential
and tourist development, but guidelines and several protected areas
ensure that it maintains much of its unspoiled character and indigenous
flora and fauna. Popular attractions include Fond D' Or, Mamiku
Gardens, Latille waterfall, the Eastern Nature Trail and Frigate
Islands, Errard Estate, and the Dennery Fish fry. |
| The South of St
Lucia is laid-back and unspoiled, offering
numerous places of natural, cultural and historic interest as well
as local guesthouses and cottages for the more adventurous
traveler. The Hewanorra International airport is located in the
South. The Anse de Sables beach
in Vieux Fort is a famous wind and kite surfing spot, and the
picturesque communities of Laborie and Choiseul offer the opportunity

Waterfall and Trail, the Fond Joyeux Waterfall, the Choiseul
Arts and Craft Center, the Morne Sion Windmill, and La Pointe
Carib, a historic Carib settlement. |
| The West Coast is mountainous and
covered with lush vegetation. Soufriere, known for the majestic
Pitons and St. Lucia's famous “drive
in-volcano,” is also one of the best scuba diving spots in
the Caribbean. Soufriere offers several good restaurants and exclusive
high-end st lucia resorts and villas

hiking trails from many parts of the island through the Department
of Forestry, which manages and protects the 19,000 acres of rainforest
reserve. St. Lucia’s tallest mountain, Mount Gimie (3117t.),
