Desbarras Turtle Watch

The community of Desbarras, located east of st Lucia's capital Castries has a group which protects and promotes the nesting of the leatherback turtle.

During the months of March through July, nightly guided tours are organized to witness the arrival of the leatherback turtles as they come ashore to lay eggs on the Grand Anse Beach, one of st Lucia's most stunning Atlantic white sand beaches (swimming not advised).
These tours are a whole night affair, so be prepared to stay up to watch this incredible experience.

st Lucia Bird Watching
Bird watching tours can be arranged with the Forest Department, Ministry of Agriculture. Visitors can observe some of st Lucia’s rare indigenous species, The colourful st Lucia Oriole, White breasted Thrasher, Lesser Antillian Peewee, st Lucia Wren and many other tropical endemic birds.

Millet Bird Sanctuary
Located in the heart of st Lucia, the Millet Bird Sanctuary Trail is a haven for birdlife. Over 30 species of birds can be found there, including five endemic species: The st Lucia Black Finch, st Lucia Parrot, st Lucia Warbler, st Lucia Oriole and st Lucia Pewee.

It takes approximately one hour to complete the 1.75 miles walk which is moderate to strenuous, and perched at about 1000 feet above sea level. The trail provides a breathtaking view of the John Compton Dam, which is the largest in the Eastern Caribbean, at 2 kilometere long with an output capacity of 6.3 million gallons of water daily.

st Lucia offers many other natural habitats for birds, including most rainforest trails, the East Coast hiking trails, and following sanctuaries:

Eau Piquant Pond, South
Boriel’s Pond, South

Other indigenous st Lucian wildlife includes the iguana, the manicou; a small nocturnal opposum, and the st Lucia ground lizard, "Zandoli Te," which is ony found on Maria islands off of the Pointe de Sable Beach in Vieux Fort.. The harmless Boa Constrictor can be found in the north-east of the island, as well as in the interior.
